Their HBCU Experiences…Revealed!

Published: Wednesday, March 31, 2010 | Author: | In:Uncategorized

The sole purpose of the existence of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in current day society has been in question for the last decade. Many of the reasons upon which HBCU’s where founded are not relevant reasons as to why they should stay open today. However, HBCU’s have been noted to produce and develop some of today’s most elite African-Americans. In effect, the question remains as to whether or not HBCUs currently serve a valid purpose in today’s society.

After checking out these video’s featuring Dana Womack, Anjelica Hill, and Edwin Jones, please leave comments discussing your view on the topic of HBCUs.

Brotherhood At Its Best: Phi Beta Sigma Celebrates

Published: Monday, February 22, 2010 | Author: | In:Uncategorized

This past Friday, the Hampton University chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. gathered for a candle light vigil in honor of their charter day.  Walking together in unison, 14 brothers of this prestigious fraternity, circled around the Sigma tree located between Ogden Hall and the university cafeteria.  Every one of them held a candle in honor of their fraternity, and continued on with scheduled activities.

Kevin Boben, Political Science major of New York, began by orating a brief history of the beginnings of Phi  Beta Sigma at Hampton University.   I could barely hear everything that was said from some of the other participants, but I do know that every member had input and felt happy to be there.

Toward the conclusion of this event, each member of the fraternity linked up in a circle around the tree to sing Our Course Speeds It’s Way. “The purpose of the candle light vigil was to commemorate the Beta Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma.  It also served to remind the brothers why they joined,” said Boben.

I was posted up like a fly on the wall, but from what I observed, the Phi Beta Sigma chapter truly captures the essence of  what “brotherhood” is.  2 snaps for that!

Keep up the good work fellas. ;-)

HIU News: President Obama to Speak at 2010 Commencement

Published: Friday, February 12, 2010 | Author: | In:Uncategorized

President Barack Obama will serve as Hampton University’s commencement speaker on May 9, 2010.  At today’s Town Hall meeting students, administrative staff, and Dr. Harvey (Hampton’s president) came together to have an open forum with students  to hear any questions, comments, and concerns.

During this meeting, Dr. Harvey announced the fabulous news!!!  Out of 18 HBCUs who requested Obama to speak at commencement, he chose HAMPTON UNIVERSITY.  No, I didn’t stutter!  Students of the senior class (QT7) are ecstatic, and will be celebrating all weekend.  The official senior social will be held tonight at Baxter’s  in Nawwfockk @ 9 p.m.

After a lot of negative press through out the academic school year, Hampton definitely made an AMAZING PR move! Locals will be on deck. #kanyeshrug

AreHeGold: The Man Behind the Brand

Published: Tuesday, January 19, 2010 | Author: | In:Uncategorized

My phone  interview with the talented young artist began a little something like this “Get me some Aveeno lotion!”  As he shopped through Walmart with his girlfriend, I grabbed my pen and paper and began to write.

Is it Deronimo? No wait, I think its SirHogans?  Wait, actually its Deron Hogans! Yes, Deron Hogans, senior Broadcast Journalism major at Hampton University.  Originally from Fort Washington, MD, Hogans has definitely made his presence known at my beloved home by the sea; Hampton University.

With music being his passion, he has used his talents to take him to the next level.  He sings, raps, and writes.  What more could an industry professional ask for?  Though he has created quite a name for him self at Hampton, his talents started back in middle school.  “I didn’t play basketball and I didn’t play football.  I just rapped and played soccer.  I was a lil different.”  Deron stated.

However, Deron has currently been working on pushing his musical talents further than a mixtape.  He has began to create a brand; AreHeGold.  AreHeGold is brand in which the target audience consists of an audience ranging from the ages of 18-25.  It serves as representation for other individuals out there just like Deron.  It’s not quite for thugs, but its not for the rich either.  It’s simply for people who play on the middle ground and are hustling (legally) for a better future.  AreHeGold represents everyone who is grinding, and creating a name for themselves while doing it.  2 snaps for that!

Deron is active member of the general Student Government Association’s Men’s Caucus.  He also is a member of the Student Leadership Program in which he serves as the chair for the Black Extravaganza that takes place at Hampton every Spring.  “This year’s title for the Black Extravaganza will be ‘Class Dismissed’.” Deron is a member of D.C./ Maryland Pre-Alumni council as well.  He has performed in a numerous amount of  shows at HU, and most recently perfomed for a listening party at Blurr Lounge in Newport News.

Some of his life goals include becoming a well known brand manager and overall media mogul.  I digg.

1 snap for Deron and 1 snap for AreHeGold.  2 snaps for Deron being the incredible man behind the brand.

Listen here for the exclusive new track.  Let me know how many snaps you would give it?
