Background: Originally from the west coast of Africa, Mimi Kamara, is one of the flyest makep artists making her mark in NYC. She’s created exquisite looks for some of today’s hottest celebs, and has brought to life the faces of runway models during New York City’s infamous Fashion Week. How did you discover your passion for makeup artistry? I’ve always loved to help people and studied Psychology in College. For me, makeup is a form of therapy for myself and the client. It’s very emotional and personal, you’re influencing more than a person’s face. You’re a heavy influence on how they feel or even a new perspective on their beauty!

What’s your favorite makeup brand, and why?

Asking me this is like asking me my favorite food. And everyone knows I LOVE to eat, LOL!! My favorite changes with my mood or the season. Right now I’m loving NARS. They seem to just get it right! Meaning color payoff and variety.

If you could only choose one, what’s the one cosmetic that woman should always have handy in their makeup bags? Concealer! You can have a perfect eye or flawless lip, but if your skin is not perfected, it’s kind of pointless.

What’s your favorite new spring/summer makeup trend? Bright lipstick! It’s been a trend I’ve loved for quite some time, but I feel the world is finally catching up and embracing it. I love to see women of all races rocking and owning it!

What inspires and keeps you motivated? Life and my ability to be living it inspires me and keeps me motivated. I can honestly say I’m not just collecting a check but influencing, pushing the envelope, and doing what I love. Every single day. During a time where many people aren’t even working, I am motivated to still keep pushing and crank out dopeness!

What’s the best advice someone has ever given you? Bevy Smith once told me to keep my own counsel because no one will ever know me better than me. This advice has enabled me to trust my own strengths, talents, and never let anyone else influence that or define my success.

Product Review: Looks like RiRi Woo’d Me!

Rouge, matte, and record breaking decribe Megastar, Rihanna’s, new RiRi Woo Lipstick from MAC Cosmetics. I will say, I’m a die hard fan of MAC’S Ruby Woo, but this little lipstick sang a slightly different song. It’s a really deep ruby red that’s not so dark that it looks like grandma’s expired burgundy, but not as bright as Ronald McDonald’s hair. The color works well on all skin tones, but I would suggest a similary colored lip liner so it doesn’t bleed pass your lip lines. And, for the texture? If you’ve been searching for a matte, RiRi Woo is SUPER matte! Once it’s on, it’s on! The texture is heavy, and won’t budge. I applied early in the evening, and the color lasted all night. It took 2 makeup wipes to fully remove it. It’s slightly darker than MAC’s classic Ruby Woo, and I beleive the texture is a little heavier and dry (but not ashy dry). I’ve been a gloss-aholic these days, but RiRi Woo’s got me feeling a little rebellious! Rihanna recently posted on her instagram feed that the lipstick sold out in 3 hours! Yes, sad but true! Supposedly, there will be restocking online this coming June. MAC RiRi Woo Lipstick will retail for $16 at maccosmetics.com. Get your coins ready!

Beauty Obsession: Clinique Happy Heart

An oldie, but a goodie! Clinique’s Happy Heart Fragrance is such a pretty lady! Stumbling across this scent by a friend who had been wearing it, my scent radar went spiraling, and I had to find out what she was wearing. When she told me it was Happy Heart from Clinique, I was shocked that this had been my first time hearing of it as the scent was right up my alley. Like most of us, I had been used to hearing all the hype about one of Clinique’s best selling fragrances, “Clinique Happy.” Instead of repeately sniffing her down like a police dog, I decided to haunt down the fragrance and snagged it for myself.

If you’re all about floral scents, Happy Heart is like a bundle of flowers in a bottle. The fragrance includes fresh notes of Mandarin and Blonde Woods. It’s more of a playful daytime fragrance, but can certainly linger into a flirty date night. Aside from the amazing smell, Clinique has a limited edition fragrance package out now which will donate $10 from each purchase to the Happy Heart Fund. The Happy Hearts Fund is a non-profit foundation dedicated to rebuilding schools and restoring hope in the lives of children after natural disasters (clinique.com).

Here’s a glimpse of my spring/summer inspiration. My wall constantly changes, as my interests shift every few months. No matter what field you work in or what stage of life you’re experiencing, it’s important to stay fresh and continually reinvent yourself. I’m not saying go and have an ”identity crisis,” but more like routinely sharpening your skills and talents. It helps to keep you focused, your self-esteem high, and your spirts high. God gave everyone a gift. It’s up to you to discover it, protect it, keep it fresh, and make it your legacy.

China Glaze has officially created an app for all the lacquer lovers out there! It’s not a silly shopping app, but more like a helpful service applications to help solve all your polish woes. Being the first of its kind, this app allows you to virtually find a shade to match any image from your photo gallery (smartphones). Or, if you don’t already have an image saved, and your inspired by something around you, the program allows you to take a new photo. Based off the image you choose to use, a variety of China Glaze shades will appear that compliment your photo. If you see a shade you like, there’s a feature that allows you to get a life-like idea of what that color would look like on you. You can adjust the nail length as well as the skin tone. Plus, the site includes a gallery of videos to show you how to create unique nail looks using the polishes. How genius, and exciting is this?

Beyonce never fails to amaze me with her awesomeness! Yes, I’m one of “those” fans. Last week she was spotted in Cuba for her 5th wedding anniversay with hubby, Jay-Z. I kept thinking to myself, those shades ABSOLUTELY added a little extra love to her already chic fit. Snappy Treats: Teriyaki Salmon & Greens

So sorry for the ghost town site for the last couple of weeks, but things have been a tad hectic on my end. I still love you all! Speaking of super busy days, I wanted to share a quick and easy dinner recipe I used a few weeks ago. Teriyaki Salmon & Greens……and yummy cheddar mashed potatoes (but don’t tell anyone about the mashed who’s counting calories!)

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

1 Pound of Salmon (or however many you would like to serve), Fresh or frozen string beans, Betty Crocker Mashed potatoes, Kikkoman Teriyaki and Marinade Sauce, Pepper, Parsley, Milk, Old Bay Seasoning, Garlic Powder, Fresh lemon or lemon juice, Butter, 1 small sized pot, 1 Medium sized pot, 1 nonstick medium sized baking pan

THE NIGHT BEFORE:

Season each salmon piece with a pinch of garlic, pepper, parsley, and old bay seasoning. This will allow the fish to marinade overnight, and allow the flavor to penetrate so it’s extra yummy when you’re all done! Continue reading →
