Name: Mimi Kamara, Celebrity Makeup Artist

Background: Originally from the west coast of Africa, Mimi Kamara, is one of the flyest makep artists making her mark in NYC.  She’s created exquisite looks for some of today’s hottest celebs, and has brought to life the faces of runway models during New York City’s infamous Fashion Week.  Mimi is a full time artist, and has continually booked gigs with some of today’s most prestigious print and television publications. #getlikeher #winning #snapforher

How did you discover your passion for makeup artistry? I’ve always loved to help people and studied Psychology in College. For me, makeup is a form of therapy for myself and the client. It’s very emotional and personal, you’re influencing more than a person’s face. You’re a heavy influence on how they feel or even a new perspective on their beauty!

What’s your favorite makeup brand, and why?

Asking me this is like asking me my favorite food. And everyone knows I LOVE to eat, LOL!! My favorite changes with my mood or the season. Right now I’m loving NARS. They seem to just get it right! Meaning color payoff and variety.

If you could only choose one, what’s the one cosmetic that woman should always have handy in their makeup bags?                                                                                             Concealer! You can have a perfect eye or flawless lip, but if your skin is not perfected, it’s kind of pointless.

What’s your favorite new spring/summer makeup trend?                                                      Bright lipstick! It’s been a trend I’ve loved for quite some time, but I feel the world is finally catching up and embracing it. I love to see women of all races rocking and owning it!

What inspires and keeps you motivated?                                                                                  Life and my ability to be living it inspires me and keeps me motivated. I can honestly say I’m not just collecting a check but influencing, pushing the envelope, and doing what I love. Every single day. During a time where many people aren’t even working, I am motivated to still keep pushing and crank out dopeness!

What’s the best advice someone has ever given you?                                                           Bevy Smith once told me to keep my own counsel because no one will ever know me better than me. This advice has enabled me to trust my own strengths, talents, and never let anyone else influence that or define my success.

The Rainbow After the Storm…

After every storm the sun will smile; for every problem there is a solution, and the soul’s indefeasible duty is to be of good cheer. ~William R. Alger

Before the storm, there is a lot of trial and error.  You are learning your surroundings, and feeling out the premises.  You can sense mother nature cooking up something in the air, but you’re hungry and your ambition is what keeps you moving.  When the air gets thick, you’re not sure whether to hide out or complete your journey.  You begin to notice a lot of your fellow travelers fleeting the scene.  As crazy as it sounds, there’s something in your soul that’s not willing to give up that easy.

During the storm, you’re thinking of a game plan.  Not just a game plan, but a master plan.  No more room for error, and your aggression isn’t taken lightly.  Exhausting all possible measures, grabbing that trench, those rain boots, and a floppy hat you are a bit nervous.  However, it’s the adrenaline rush of being able to get where you want to be that keeps you moving forward through the filth, the slick roads, and the dangerous outsiders.  You somehow managed to work it out, and reach your destiny.

After the storm, the sun comes out and you begin to notice that you don’t look or even smell like what you’ve been through.  When you peak up, and notice the rainbow, you have a greater appreciation for your natural strengths, a humbled soul, and a glow that shines even after the sun goes back down.  You’ve faced your fears, and defeated personal insecurities.  You won….

This isn’t about some storm, it’s about life….

Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the beautiful, Natalie Coughlin, most commonly known, Olympic Swimmer. What you may not know is that Natalie is also a Lifestyle Expert!  She’s had a recent collaboration with LensCrafters, and provided me with some really amazing tips about how to live a healthy lifestyle, a few of her favorite frames from LensCrafters’ Spring/Summer 2013 eyewear collections, and of course, a few of her personal beauty tips.  There’s nothing like a young lady, juggling it all, but still balancing life in style.

What do you love so much about LensCrafters? I think it’s great that they have so many companies that they represent, and you get a lot of variety while you’re in the store.  Also, you’re able to try on different pairs with a virtual mirror.  Like now, if I’m trying on other glasses, and I look at myself in the mirror, I can’t see how I look because I need prescriptions. Turn Your Negative into Positive with LcB Nail Lacquer

I’m a sucker for beauty brands that give back, and learning the story behind LcB Nail Lacquer was truly inspiring.  Most recently featured in Nails Magazine, LcB Nail Lacquer was created around the principles of building self-esteem, and giving back to charities and organizations.  LaKhiva Blann, Founder, CEO and Artistic Director, grew up being called different names in reference to her dark skin tone.  Whether the comments tended to be flattering or insulting, LaKhiva was motivated and persuaded  to create a line for women that would help individuals “strive to feel alive.”

The “Concept Collection” has a host of colors that are great for fall! Inspired by LaKhiva’s upbringing and the latest fashion trends, LcB Nail Lacquer is really giving you a powerful bang for your buck.  There are 12 eye-catching shades that are fragrance free, water-resistant, fast drying, and not to mention long-lasting ($8, lcbnaillacquer.com)! There are also color recommendations for fair, medium, and dark skin tones.  These tips are beneficial as it sometimes can be difficult to figure out which colors complement your complexion best.

LaKhiva’s motto is for everyone to “lift as we climb.”  During her personal climb toward success she has supported a countless number of charities and cause related organizations.  The charities that her company are most enthusiastic about include the American Heart Association and Centers for Youth & Families.

LcB Nail Lacquer is an outstanding company that will continue to grow.  Make sure you visit the site, and support a company that’s really making a difference.
